OVERVIEW OF STORYTELLING WORKSHOP WITH THE SYNDICATION BUREAU
(17 – 24 Feb 2019)
Syndication Bureau will offer Young Media Leader participants a week-long, hands-on training program on the basics of journalism. This will see the YML-participants researching story ideas and conducting preliminary reporting. They will then refine this into a story “pitch” that they will make to their editors. When their pitch is approved, they will be briefed by editors on what is expected in the story, after which the YML-participants will be expected to complete their reporting and write a first draft. YML-participants will then be taken through the process of filing their stories and seeing the next step in the editing process. Stories might require more reporting, for instance. Or they may require rewriting. Once this step is completed, the YML-participants will refile a new draft and be taken through the final editing process. The training program is meant to replicate the process of story writing and filing found in newspapers and magazines. It will emphasize the need for accuracy and strict adherence to deadlines. In addition, YML-participants will be introduced to the various social media channels through which a story is transmitted. They will be shown what the editorial requirements are for each – Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Finally, all YML-participants will take part in a workshop in journalism ethics, led by a reporter at a major international newspaper. YML-participants should emerge from the program with a basic understanding of the requirements of journalism: a dedication to accuracy, honesty and fairness; an appreciation of the required work ethic in the profession and a commitment to meet deadlines.
